Description: Instituted in 1830; one of the older Spanish conservatories modeled on the Central European system of music education. Previous to 2001 completion of 4 years of primary was sufficient for entry. Hence it was difficult for us to ascertain level of study. The COU (Curso de Orientacion Universitaria or university orientation course) eliminated in 2001 had been used to determine when a conservatory student attained the stage of university level studies. Within the conservatory, levels of study were: elementary, middle or professional, and superior. The title of profesor, attained upon completion of the superior level, was not sufficient for graduate admission. With education reform under LOGSE (Organic Law on the General Arrangement of the Educational System) the titulo superior introduced in 2001 is viewed by the Spanish as equivalent to a licenciatura, and hence, an admissible level to graduate study. Admission to the titulo superior requires the bachiller, completion of the middle level (grado medio) of conservatory studies and an entrance examination.
