First degree/qualification: Since 1997 kandidaatti (bachelor's degree, 3 years or 120 credits) and the lisensiaatti (licentiate) in dentistry, medicine and veterinary medicine (5-6.5 years or 200-250 credits). Prior to 1997 kandidaati (master's degree, 5-6 years).
Minimum quality for UW-Madison Graduate School admission: Performance in the "good" range for both old grading system and new.
Minimum level for UW-Madison Graduate School admission: 3 year bachelor's followed by a 1 year master's.
Documents required: Official list of courses and grades received; official certification of degree and date awarded. All documents in Finnish and English.
Description: Instituted in 1640 as the Academy of Turku. Levels of study: basic, intermediate and advanced. First degree in major and minor subjects with thesis (no advanced level). After the Bologna agreement the bachelor/master degrees will coexist with the older degrees until phase-in is complete. Usual admission requirements: ylioppilastutkinto (matriculation examination) (12 years of education) and an entrance examination.

Lisensiaatti: 2 years, by any combination of coursework, thesis and examination following the kandidaatti.
Tohtori (doctorate): 4 years, master's required for admission.
