Description: Instituted in 1958. Became an "institution of national importance" in 1961. IITs are the best engineering schools in India. Admission is selective. Usual admission requirements are a 12 year examination and the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), a competitive national examination for entrance to all seven IITs.
