Description: Instituted in 1956 as a rural training center. Renamed Mara College in 1965 with mission of providing professional training for "bumiputras" or ethnic Malays. Renamed Mara Institute of Technology in 1967. In 1996 acquired university status although name was not changed until 1999. Under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education Higher Education Division. Besides degrees still offers diplomas of 1-4 years duration. Has branch campuses in nearly every state in Malaysia. Admission requirements vary depending on the diploma or degree program. For diploma studies usual admission requirement is the Malaysian Certificate of Education or Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) (11 years of education). Degree programs require the higher school certificate or Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) (12 years of education).
